PROFILES
Choonnam Chung, conductor
 

Choonnam Chung, conductorChoonnam Chung, Music Director of the Chicago Classical Philharmonic, studied music performance at ChungAng University in Seoul Korea.

Mr. Chung won the second prize for the Trombone Performance of the Music Association Competition of Korea in 1980. He played with Incheon City Symphony Orchestra as an Assistant Principal Trombone Player for seven years, Seoul Wind Ensemble as a Principle Euphonium Player, and Rinnai Wind Ensemble as Faculty and Player. He then came to Chicago in 1992, and finished his Master’s Degree in Music Performance in 1995 and Certificate in Music Performance in 1997 at DePaul University.

He has traveled and performed solos with the Chicago Staff Band, countries including Chile, Canada, New Zealand, U.S.A..

Mr. Chung also completed the Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting studying with Dr. Glen Block at Illinois State University in 2003, and was an Assistant Conductor at ISU Orchestra.

He resides in North suburb of Chicago area with a Violinist, Younghee Kim and 8 year old daughter Evelyn. He is a Choir Director of the First Korean United Methodist Church.

He organized the Chicago Classical Philharmonic in 2007. Under the leadership of Maestro Chonnnam Chung, the Philharmonic is leading and upgrading the cultural Scene in Chicago area with fresh and unique concert programs.

Patricia Rhiew, soprano
 

Korean-American born soprano, PATRICIA RHIEW, is a young talent that has already graced several regional and national stages.  Most recently, Ms. Rhiew was seen as Liu in Dupage Opera Theater’s production of Turandot.  

On the opera stage, Ms. Rhiew has performed the roles of Micaёla in Carmen and Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, both with Dupage Opera Theater , Adele in Die Fledermaus for Chicago Light Opera Works, Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore with Lyric Opera Cleveland, scenes from Manon with the Santa Fe Opera, and several roles with Baltimore Opera in their productions of La Scala di Seta and Salome.  Other roles include Micaëla (La Tragédie de Carmen), Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore), the Foreign Woman (The Consul), and Lucy (The Telephone). 

Ms. Rhiew has received several prestigious awards from the Jensen Foundation, Young Patronesses of the Opera, Bel Canto Foundation, Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and NATS where she was awarded a scholarship to attend the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.  

Her training has included the Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program, Baltimore Opera Studio, Lyric Opera Cleveland Young Artist Program, and the University of Michigan and Hope College where she received her Master’s and Bachelor’s of Music respectively. 

Originally from Farmington Hills, Michigan, Ms. Rhiew currently lives in the Chicagoland area.

Chicago Classical Philharmonic (CCP)
 

Chicago Classical Philharmonic (CCP) was founded in February 2007 and is composed of professional Korean and American musicians who reside in the Chicago area.

CCP has been active in providing quality concerts in the Korean community and the Chicago area. Its musicians have a passion to provide performances of a higher musical standard.

Under the direction of maestro Choonnam Chung, they had an “Inaugural Concert” in July, 2007, “Autumn and Classic” in September, 2007, “Buona Notte Pavarotti” Concert in December 2007, and an encore performance in May of 2008, “Nostalgia and Classic” in July 2008, and “Christmas and Classic” in December of 2008. The philharmonic had a Concert in Celebration of the Korean Independence Day in August 2009.

CCP is revitalizing the cultural power of the Korean community, finding hidden talent in the young generation and giving them performance opportunities. CCP will lead them to be cultural leaders of the next generation succeeding to their true cultural identity and heritage.

For the purpose of inspiring both the Korean community and Chicago area residents with cultural delight and harmony through music, CCP is planning various concerts.


시카고 클래시컬 필하모닉(CCP)은 시카고 한인 전문 연주자들을 주축으로2007년 2월 창단되어 주류사회 전문 연주자들과 함께 60여명의 연주자들로 구성 되어있다.

CCP는
1) 예술성과 대중성을 겸비하여 수준높고 다양한 음악을 지역사회에 제공하며,
2) 재능있는 한인 음악인 들을 육성, 교육하여 주류사회에 진출시키는 목적을 갖고 있으며,
3) 양질의 음악문화 창출로 교민사회 문화발전에 기여하며 동시에 한민족의 정체성을 이땅에 공고히 하려는 목적을 갖고 있다.

CCP는 2007년 7윌1일 음악감독및 상임 지휘자, 정춘남의 지휘로 “창단 연주회”를 필두로 그해 9월15일 “가을과 클래식” 2008년 6월1일 “향수와 클래식,” 그리고 12월23일 “크리스마스와 클래식” 등의 시리즈 연주를 하였다.

CP는 미 주류 대형 엔터테인먼트 회사인 ONESTI의 초청으로2007 년 12월 “파바로티 추모 연주회”와 2008년 5월 엥콜공연을 성황리에 마침으로 한인 음악인의 위상을 주류사회에 알리기도 하였으며, 제64주년 광복절 경축 음악회를2009년 8월15일에 개최하며 지역사회 문화발전을 위하여 노력하고 있다.
